Julien Sebban founded Uchronia in Paris in 2019, building on his final-year project at London’s Architectural Association. Formed from Greek roots, the studio’s name evokes a world outside time, beyond chronology.
Six months later, in 2020, the studio won the competition to design Forest, a brasserie set within the brutalist architecture of the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris. The restaurant opened the following year. Projects that followed include a new generation of Sonia Rykiel boutiques, Café Uchronia, created for the Maison & Objet fair in January 2022, and, later, the Day Bed installation at the Hôtel de la Marine for Paris Design Week 2024.
Uchronia’s visual language brings together vivid colours, floral motifs, undulating resin, gathered curtains and lacquered walls. Its work has drawn comparisons with the eighteenth century, disco and Sottsass. Sebban’s own apartment in the 18th arrondissement, which he shares with his husband Jonathan Wray, artistic director of the maison Royère, serves as a manifesto for the studio.
For the maison Charles, Uchronia translates this visual language into bronze. The Boogie mirror weaves together three loops, in green, pink and gold, each enclosing a glint of mirror. At the top of its stem, the Cosmos lamp opens into five polished-brass petals, set on a flared base with a blue patina. The Groovy sconce combines two dark rosettes with a rose-bronze arabesque. The Bloom pendant opens overhead like a flower, its plum petals lined in gold and folding around a green heart.
