Berceaux

by Jacques Charles, 60's   { The Charles }

The cradle is known by its curve, that hollow that rocks and bears. Jacques Charles made of it the foot of a low table: brass plates, crossed in an X, are hollowed with broad concave curves, like so many boat hulls joined back to back. The glass top rests on this crossing. The brass, gilt and smooth, catches the light in the hollow of each curve. The piece plays on the full and the void, on the solid metal and the transparent glass.
