by Jean Charles, 60's { The Charles }
The palm frond here sheathes the curved leg of the piece: the maison Charles cast in gilt bronze cabriole legs dressed with chased palms, climbing as they coil up to the top. The table weds them to a top of dark marble, leather, or glass; the desk (ref. 6966), with or without a drawer, crowns them with a glass top, more aerial. The bronze, gilt or silvered, renders each vein. The contrast makes the piece: the opulent palm of the base, the clean purity of the top.
