A screen halts the light the better to diffuse it. The maison Charles made of it the plainest sconce there is: a slightly curved metal panel, set on the wall, that folds the brightness up and down in two soft sheets. No ornament, no motif: only the surface of the brushed brass, which captures and diffuses the light. The form, clean and full, plays on economy. The screen washes the wall on either side, without ever dazzling.
