by Chrystiane Charles, 70's { The Charles }
The shoji, the wood-and-paper screen of Japanese houses, filters the light instead of stopping it: a light frame, stretched panels, muted clarity. Chrystiane Charles takes up its spirit in a brass frame that encloses two curved metal panels, one high, one low. The whole, vertical and openwork, is as much screen as lamp. The brass draws its straight edges and diffuses a soft clarity at mid-height. Geometric rigour meets here the restraint of a Sukiya room.
