by La Maison Charles, 1900 { The Charles }
Kansas has the plain frankness of American reading lamps: the maison Charles made of it a brass floor lamp with an articulated arm, whose swinging bracket brings the shade out above the armchair. The turned shaft, ringed with bands, rises from a moulded round base. The fabric shade caps the adjustable arm. Nothing showy: a reading-corner lamp, sure and comfortable, set by hand. Polished brass gives it its warmth; the bracket, its freedom of movement.
