Papillon

by Jacques Charles, 60's   { The Charles }

The butterfly folds and unfolds its wings in a single beat: the maison Charles drew from it a pendant made of broad, curved blades of polished brass that overlap and coil like wings closed around the light. The metal catches the brightness on each fold. The light escapes through the slits between the blades. Suspended, the piece recalls the insect at rest as much as the closed flower. The smooth metal sets the least reflection of the ceiling trembling. This pendant exists in a tighter version.
