Jean-Manuel Freitas takes up the classical column here to translate it into light: a cylindrical shaft of fluted glass, mounted on a polished metal base, that lights from within and sets each of its flutings gleaming. The white cylindrical fabric shade caps the column. The glass diffuses a soft, continuous clarity from base to summit. The form, simple and full, plays the milky transparency of the glass against the gleam of the metal. The fluting, ancient, becomes here a source of light.
