The great stupa of Sanchi, in India, carries on its gateways carved discs and wheels, symbols of the Buddhist law. Philippe Parent has covered the shaft of this lamp with them: a column of pale wood where circular medallions in relief line up on all four faces. The fabric shade, topped with a circular finial, caps the column. The pale wood catches the light in the hollow of each disc. The motif, repeated, gives the base its grave, regular rhythm.
