by Jean Charles, 60's { The Charles }
Corn is the gift of the New World: domesticated in Mexico thousands of years ago, it fed whole civilisations before reaching Europe. Jean Charles has cast an ear of it in gilt bronze, kernel against kernel, its husks parting and falling back like a flower. The ear rises atop a column on its square base. The metal shade, topped with a finial, closes the vertical. The light reveals one by one the kernels lined up beneath the open husk.
