At Porto, the Dom Luís I bridge has thrown its great iron arch over the Douro since 1886, the work of an engineer trained in Eiffel's school. Jean-Manuel Freitas, whose roots are Portuguese, has entrusted its memory to this lamp: a stem of hammered bronze springing from a flat base and leaning into a cantilever, like a span thrown over the void to carry the shade forward. The surface keeps the trace of the hand and sets the light vibrating. The conical fabric shade balances the oblique surge.
