Nautila Ecrin

by Jacques Charles, 60's   { The Charles }

The nautilus traces the truest spiral in nature: as it grows its shell coils to a proportion unchanged for hundreds of millions of years. Jacques Charles has cast it in bronze, faithful to the partitions and the smooth curve of the model. In this version, the bronze nautilus is laid against a solid block of metal, like a piece set on its casket. The gilded shell, chased chamber by chamber, stands out against the mirror surface of the brass base. The rectangular shade takes up the line of the block. The light slides from the volute to the polished metal, weightless.
