by Chrystiane Charles, 70's { The Charles }
The wave that breaks and curls upon itself is one of the most depicted forms in history, from the Japanese print to ancient friezes. Chrystiane Charles has cast it in relief in gilt bronze, at the foot of a geometric column: the foam rises, curves into a crest and falls back in chased volutes that wrap the angles of the base. The rest of the shaft stays smooth and full. The rectangular brass shade extends the gilded vertical. The light rolls its gleam along the crest of the wave and sinks into its hollows.
