by Chrystiane Charles, 70's { The Charles }
On the beaches of the Antilles grows the sea grape, whose broad round leaves stand up to salt and wind. Chrystiane Charles has cast the leaf in bronze, sculptural: a veined disc, slightly buckled, laid flat against the wall. The veins radiate from the petiole to the wavy edge of the leaf, chased one by one. Nothing else — no shade: the source, hidden behind the leaf, backlights it and lays its halo on the wall. The composition comes in one, two or three leaves, overlapping as on the plant. Gilt or silvered, the bronze catches the light in the hollow of each of its veins.
