Erato presides over the song of love: in the procession of the nine Muses, she inspires lyric poetry, the lyre held against the hip. The sconce takes up her surge. A bronze stem rises from the wall, divides into a fork, and bears a broad curved band of fabric. The casting keeps the trace of the gesture, knotted and taut like an instrument's string. The light lodges behind the veil: it climbs toward the ceiling, descends again from below, and lets the bronze cut a clean shadow.
