Esmeralda bears the name of Victor Hugo's gypsy, the barefoot dancer on the parvis of Notre-Dame. Created in 1955, the lamp keeps her mobile grace: two bronze uprights, fine legs ending in clawed feet, support a cylindrical shade. The patina finish leaves the metal its dark depth, its reliefs worked by hand like bark. The light shuts itself within the tube of fabric and crosses it in an even glow: it sets on the floor the narrow shadow of the two legs, raised like a dancer at rest.
